Behind The Scenes

Skuff.tv interviewed Adrian and some of the team during a recent Redboat 3D animation project to find out a bit more about what goes on and how it all comes together.

"Charged with the task of creating photorealistic horses, cows and sheep, running through a white studio by Sydney advertising agency Xavier, we needed to make sure we had the best team on board.

Initially we quoted on filming live animals in a studio in Sydney. The cost of a one day studio shoot with multiple animals against green screen turned out to be the same as animating them. Filming them in studio posed the risk that the animals would not behave, and a second day shoot would have blown the budget completely.

Animating the animals in 3D would give us the flexibility to have the animals to perform exactly the way we wanted without the risk.

The project ran for three and a half months, with a team of eight, comprising a carefully selected crew of specialists in modelling, character animation, rendering, dynamics, liquid simulation, visual effects and compositing.

I found working with some of the team in-house and some remotely, sharing files via secure remote login, gave me greater flexibility to have the right people doing the right tasks at the right time, without having anyone waiting around for something to do. Not to mention offering a better work-life balance.

After an initial pre-production meeting in Sydney, communications with the Agency in Sydney was conducted entirely using Skype, email and telephone, with the client able to login and download regular updates, or upload reference material for the team.

Everything came in on schedule, and on budget. Both Agency and client loved the results, and the TVC is on air at the moment throughout Australia."

Thanks to the team for letting us interview them, and a big thanks to Skuff.TV for putting this video together.
