Redboat creates game-changer as finalist at AEAF awards

There’s no big secret to how Australian animation studio Redboat is creating epic, high quality, detailed 3d animation without any infrastructure.

With demand for higher resolutions and more extravagant visual effects, animation studios continually blow capital on new computing infrastructure to deliver the needs of advertising agencies, film studios and TV networks. It’s a financial and creative sink-hole.

Not any more. Redboat Executive Producer Adrian King says Redboat is getting the job done faster without the need for a render-farm or central office.

It is this lean and agile approach that has gained Redboat finalist status in the 2017 Australian Animation & Effects Festival for an ambitious, sci-fi, 3d animated TV commercial for agency Xavier Advertising. View the epic Hino 500 TV commercialthat was created in only nine weeks.

Founded 11 years ago, Redboat collaborates with producers, designers and animators via the internet to work with greater efficiency than traditional studios. “Instead of spending big on infrastructure, we outsource the technology to the cloud and focus on the creative process. It’s game-changing.”

Animation studios typically need to wait overnight or weekend for 3d renders to finish before they can review for changes. By using Google’s Cloud Computing Platform, with 32,000 CPUs at their disposal, Redboat eliminated the rendering bottleneck. “We can iterate multiple work in progress versions the same day,” says King.

King’s vision for Redboat is to empower clients to achieve more impact and value for their stakeholders and brands, while providing the customer care and attention that a smaller animation studio can offer.

Jamie Webster, Creative Director of Xavier Advertising, who along with his team came up with the concept for the Hino 500 TVC says, “With Redboat we can demand high-end motion picture quality visual effects and animation but without the Hollywood price tag. It’s a win for us and our clients.”

Redboat’s Hino 500 Wide Cab TVC commercial will be screened at the Australian Animation & Effects Awards night celebrations at the Chauvel Cinema, Sydney, on 16th August 2017.

Testimonials

"Redboat helped us to create an online animation for interested parties to lean about Marine Zoning. We had a short turnaround time and very specific requirements, which did change at our end during the course of the project. The team at Redboat were wonderful. They offered suggestions to improve the process along the way, never seemed phased by last minute changes and were generally a pleasure to work with. We were thrilled with the end product. I’d highly recommend their services. "

"We used Redboat to tell a complex story in a short animation. We were completely happy both with the result – it make quite an impact at the time and is still being used successfully – and with the professional way in which Adrian interacted with the team in developing and fine-tuning the brief. I enthusiastically recommend his work generally and have done to others who might be looking for similar services."
