Australian National Outlook (Overview)

Script, design, animation, & audio production.

Helping to navigate the future...

Redboat was commissioned by CSIRO to script, design and produce a set of four animations to convey the key analysis of the pivotal study by Steve Hatfield-Dodds et al. CSIRO provided a table of key messages, graphs, and charts, along with a draft of the full report, with which Redboat developed the voice over script and visual concepts. Storyboards and designs, using the key colour scheme selected graphics from the report, where provided to CSIRO for approval. Our five strong animation team the created the animation under the direction of Redboat Producer and Animation Director Adrian King.

The project consisted of 4 animations; an overview of the Australian National Outlook, plus detailed 3 animations for Energy, Water, and Food

The National Outlook is a first attempt to understand and analyse the connections in Australia’s physical economy many decades into the future.

The paper made front cover of Nature Journal on November 5th 2015.

"A representation of two alternative scenarios for the Australian economy to 2050. For a developed nation to move to a sustainable society requires simultaneous rebalancing of economics, energy, agriculture and behaviour. Steve Hatfield-Dodds et al. use a multimodel framework to assess the ability to achieve this within a single-nation continent, Australia. Looking at climate, water, food, energy and biodiversity, they show that economic improvement is possible without ecological deterioration, but that specific political and economic choices need to be made to achieve this."
